App Comparisons

I've been lifting for 3 years. [48 y/o M.] I've had a couple of personal trainers, but I prefer iPhone apps.

I started with BodyBuilding.com's BodySpace. I used it for 2 years. It was a pretty-good tracker, it looks good, and has a ton of recommended workouts. It did have a couple of glitches with the tech, but no more than most apps. After two years, I got bored, so I switched to JeFit.

I stuck with JeFit for a few months. It was very similar to BodySpace in its functionality and gloss. It didn’t have a great social function. And its reports were too complicated. Overall, it was too similar to BodyBuilding.com. It’s just a “tracker” too. I gave up on it after just a couple of months.

I was then drawn to Dr Muscle because of its artificial intelligence (AI). It uses a very complex algorithm to tell you how much weight to lift for how many reps and sets to do. Once I stopped trying to out-think it, I realized that it was smarter than I was. It asks how many reps I was able to do and how many reps-in-reserve I have. It then adjusts the next workout accordingly. The creator has a PhD and uses a lot of science to continually improve the AI. The downsides of the app are the price, it doesn't look pretty, the reports are very simple, and there’s no social function. The BIG advantage is that it’s a freaking genius. I'm still using it, but I'm trying a couple of others.

I then tried FitBod because it claims to have an AI similar to Dr. Muscle’s. It looks great and includes monitoring the time since you last worked out certain muscles. It looks very smart and high-end; however the Facebook group says that it has A LOT of glitches and often loses data. That’s unacceptable. I haven’t had a chance to test the AI over time to see if it’s as competent as Dr Muscle’s. And I won’t because I won’t use it if it loses data.

I then tried Gymaholic. It looks great, but it’s AI is not really AI. It’s just a tracker that will increase the weights by whatever increment you want.

So I’m back to Dr Muscle. Has anyone found an app with a strong AI that guides you on the weight and sets?
