(help with the science of it) Are sugars and protein important before workouts?

So I always thought sugars and protein helped you have energy in your workout, and helped you get the most of your lifts when it comes to building muscle mass. My coworker however (a former professional trainer) was quick to correct me and said that this was a myth started by the protein shake companies.

Of course I wasn't going to argue or ask for sources. She went to college for this stuff, I did not. Plus it was a friendly conversation and I didn't want to be a dick. But literally everything I've ever seen says that sugars and protein before a workout are what you should aim for. Am I missing something here?

Any help or science is appreciated, thank you!
