How serious is the threat to my rotator cuff from exercises like behind-the-neck presses and pulls, as well upright rows (or other internally rotated pulls) and Olympic lifts?
I am having trouble finding a consensus. Is a level of mobility the distinction to be made here? Does it matter? Does it not? To what degree? How is it achieved?
My hypothesis is that in order for these movements to be safe, one must have enough mobility to have these movements in such positions so that they mimic their "safe" counterparts (where BTN presses or pulls, for example, mimic their front of the body counterparts).
Simply, I am curious because I have been looking to get into Olympic weightlifting. Also, I have been doing research on shoulder health, long-term, when doing certain exercises. I have encountered an overwhelmingly large amount of controversy regarding shoulder health during common weightlifting movements, as well as behind the neck and movements with internal shoulder rotation.
I am not a scientist, or extremely knowledgeable in this field. However, if you will provide a response please do not use anecdotes; research or anatomical arguments would be great.
Lastly, if at the least anyone could just point me in the direction of some reading, that would be great. Thank you.
